GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the V.P. of Perioperative Services and the OR Clinical Coordinator  
according to established policies and procedures, the perioperative RN plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care provided to patients of all ages, whose protective reflexes or self care abilities are potentially compromised during surgical or other invasive procedures.  The perioperative RN possesses clinical knowledge, judgment, and critical thinking skills based upon scientific principles to address the patient’s physical, psychological, and spiritual needs.

The perioperative RN ensures a safe environment for patients and staff, and serves as a resource to healthcare team members.  The perioperative RN collaborates and consults with management, Clinical Coordinators, physicians, educator, staff nurses, and technical staff, to ensure patient and family- centered care Perioperative Nursing care. Ensures that the quality and safe delivery of care to patients from neonates through geriatric patients.  Although the perioperative RN works collaboratively with professional and technical healthcare providers, the perioperative nurse is accountable for patient outcomes resulting from the nursing care provided during the surgical or invasive procedure.

The goal of Perioperative nursing practice is to assist the patients, families, and significant others to achieve a level of wellness equal to or greater than which they had prior to the surgical or invasive procedure. 

Provides competency based patient and family centered care to patients undergoing an elective and emergency surgical procedures 

•Serves as a resource to healthcare team members 
•Minimizes delays for surgeon and patient by ensuring required supplies and equipment are available 
•Provides progress reports directly or indirectly to patients’ and their families

Professional Practice
•Circulate and scrubs in elective and emergent surgical procedures
•In conjunction with the Service Leader and Educator Perioperative Services serves as a resource for 
nurses, surgical technologists, other technologist, and students
•Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices
•Actively participates in unit based staff meetings and education programs; seeks out information when unable to attend programs
•Maintains up-to-date knowledge of clinical advances in the equipment and supplies used
•Participates in the development, revision, or deletion of departmental policies, standards, and procedures

Quality and Safety
•Participates in unit or hospital based Quality Improvement and Safety Programs
•Complies with regulations, including but not limited to: The Joint Commission, CDC, CMS  
•Identifies and participates in the resolution of problems 
•Communicates physician's requests and preferences to  Service Leaders
•Monitors the condition of all specialty instruments and equipment 
•Immediately removes defective instruments or equipment from service and  reports defects to Service Leader

•Minimizes wastage of supplies by referring the surgeons preference card when preparing for the case
•Informs Service Leaders of any items that need to be added or deleted to the preference card 
•Minimizes the expenses required for repair or replacement by caring for the instruments and equipment during and after the surgical procedure


•Level of knowledge equivalent to that ordinarily acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in nursing 
•Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts 
•Three years of related nursing experience preferred
•Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR) preferred
