Respiratory Therapist 36 hours nights

GENERALSUMMARY:     Under thedirection of the Medical Director and the direct supervision of the Manager ofthe Respiratory Care Department, the Respiratory Therapist will initiate andadminister all respiratory therapy modalities according to establishedpolicies, procedures and protocols at Metrowest Medical Center. Therapy will beadministered to patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction/disability or forpreventive purposes.  Participates inclinical education.   Ensures quality andsafe delivery of care to patients of all ages.

 

PRINCIPALDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.THERAPIES:

A.      Administers and manages all ventilator care,continuous positive pressure breathing, weaning techniques, and artificialairway care. Set up changes and monitors associated equipment.

B.      Administers therapeutic gases (oxygen andhelium/oxygen), utilizing high flow cannulas and masks. Sets up, changes, andmonitors associated equipment.

C.      Administers humidity and medications such asbronchodilators, antibiotics, utilizing cool and heated nebulization.

D.      Performs chest physical therapy, chest percussions andvibrations, postural drainage, incentive exercises, and ambulation exercises asindicated.

E.       Responds to all "Code Blue" and otheremergency situations; performs and/or participates in cardiopulmonaryresuscitation. May also assist with bedside surgical procedures.

 

2.DIAGNOSTIC TESTING:

A.      Draws arterial blood from patients for analysis.

B.      Performs clinical diagnostic and pulmonary functiontests, such as bedside spirometry and other selected tests.

C.      May assist with bedside bronchoscopies and otherinvasive procedures as needed.

 

3. PATIENTASSESSMENT:

A.      Assesses patient respiratory status, observes patientadjustment/reaction to therapy and evaluates the appropriateness of alltherapy. Consults with attending staff concerning the most efficacious forms oftherapy, and makes recommendations to enhance patient care.

 

4. PATIENTAND FAMILY TEACHING:

A.      Provides education and instruction regarding,medication administration, energy conservation techniques, incentive spirometryexercises, ambulation exercises, and other respiratory modalities.

 

5.ADMINISTRATIVE AND EDUCATION DUTIES:

A.      Maintains all necessary patient and departmentalrecords; enters clinical data regarding therapy administered and its effect.Clinical documentation will be entered into the patient electronic medical record.

B.      Assumes designated responsibilities of a chargetherapist as assigned by the department manager or clinical coordinator whenrequired. Provides clinical and general guidance to agency, per diem, andstudent personnel as needed.

C.      Performs other duties as assigned by the departmentmanager.

D.      Participates in departmental quality assurance andassigned P.I. (Performance Improvement) projects.

E.       Participates in formal and informal education programsfor respiratory therapy staff members, nurses, physicians, and other alliedhealth professionals. Provides direct supervision for students.

F.       Maintains up-to-date knowledge of development, issues,and techniques in respiratory care through attendance at meetings andeducational conferences.

 

6. EDUCATION, LICENSUREAND CERTIFICATION:

A. Graduate of an Accredited RespiratoryTherapy program required.

B. Associate Degree in Applied Sciences,Bachelor Degree Preferred.

C.      Certified by the NationalBoard for Respiratory Care as a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) orRegistered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). It is strongly encouraged that CRTtherapists advance to RRT within 2 years of employment.

D.      Maintains current licensure by the State of Massachusettsas a Respiratory Therapist.

E.       Maintains current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRPcertifications once obtained. New hires are required to obtain BLS priorto providing direct care to patients.Additional certifications as listed are required within 1 year of employment.

 

7. WORKINGCONDITIONS:

A.      Patient care environment

B. Maybe exposed to communicable diseases and other work place hazards.  May be involved in stressful conditions whileperforming job duties in a constantly changing environment

C.      Must Be able to work independently.

                        Respiratory Therapist are members of the Code Blue’sRapid Response Team

                Section F

                        Respiratory Therapist- respond to high risk deliveries,including need for bubble cpap,

                        Intubation& ventilation of neonates as well as administering surfactant.
